20+ years of experience with foil assist technology

The team at Dart Ferries have over 20 years experience in foil technology. For the new Dart Ferry project we have partnered with Team New Zealand Design Works to provide the latest in foil design for improved vessel efficiency and enhanced passenger comfort.

Foil development

From the early days of model testing using towed 1:10 scale models to the current use of the latest in CFD computer modelling, the Dart Ferries team has been at the forefront of foil development.

Powercat - Performance improvements with foils

11.5-metre powercat launched in 2010 without foils. Foils were fitted in 2017 and provided a 15% reduction in fuel use while also improving rough water performance and passenger comfort.

Team New Zealand

Team New Zealand Design Works partnership

Team New Zealand Design Works will supply computational fluid dynamics modelling of the existing Dart Ferry hulls and use this information to identify optimum foil locations, foil shapes and foil sizes.

24-Metre Dart Ferry Foil Advantages

  • The lift generated by the 5 carbon fibre foils fitted to the Dart ECO 2400 significantly reduces drag and increases fuel efficiency.
  • The foils also greatly improve rough water performance, acting as stabilisers and giving passengers a more comfortable ride in rough conditions.

Dart Ferries Tri-Hull Foil Configuration

  • The Dart Ferry Tri-Hull design enables the midships and aft foils to be moved further away from the vessel’s centreline and further outboard, providing additional athwartship stability.
  • The smaller forward foil is designed to reduce fore and aft pitching.
